When you own party wails against you and a Roman Catholic Cardinal pretty much calls you a liar it’s hard to imagine what, exactly, you could stand for…

After months of saying he would, then more months saying he wouldn’t, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed HB40, a bill that gives pretty much unquestioned funding to abortion. The two issues at play here are, 1) Should state money go to fund all abortions, and 2) does this Governor believe in ANYTHING?!?!? You know this Republican governor is in trouble when the Republican Floor Leader, Rep. Peter Breen, issues a public statement that ends, ” In the face of overwhelming evidence of Rauner’s inability to competently administer the Illinois government, inability to stand up to Mike Madigan effectively, and inability to keep his word and his commitments, I can no longer support him. And whether or not they are able to agree publicly, I know hundreds of elected Republicans, along with hundreds of thousands of Republican voters, who feel the same way I do.”

For some of a certain age sneaking around with a copy of your friend’s father’s Playboy was a right of passage. Later it became a spearhead for the sexual revolution that ran through America. Lately it has been labeled as misogynist and complicit in creating rape culture. For me, Hugh Hefner was the publisher of a magazine that printed some of the best and funniest cartoons in America. Later I learned he treated his cartoonists well, compensated them fairly and gave them great play in his publication. So, yeah, I was that guy who actually DID read Playboy for the cartoons…
America’s economy is built on immigration. I believe in free markets and in a small ‘l’ liberal approach to immigration.

The Chicago Bears are coming off an improbable OT win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, (a game they tried mightily to lose given boneheaded plays like that of Marcus Cooper who turned a sure touchdown into one for the blooper reel), the Chicago Bears march into Lambeau Field to take on division archenemy Green Bay Packers. Defending a one game winning streak will be a lot easier if the Bears can avoid the stupid.

Yep, I’m still a deficit hawk.
So imagine my reaction when one analyst pointed out that from what we know of the Trump plan there could be $1.5 trillion added to the deficit over the next ten years.

I played football in high school. Starting nose tackle. I loved it. The camaraderie. The discipline. Even the violence. (To this day my right ankle makes a loud, crackling sound. A souvenir from a pulling guard who stomped on it. When I limped to the sideline my coach yelled at me to get back into the game. Good times).
As we learn more and more about the detrimental effects of playing football I find I would be less and less likely to let my own kids play. For all of the wonderful life lessons learned I’m just not sure it’s worth the damage.

In a shock move, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, (yes, she is the daughter of THAT Madigan), announced she will not run for re-election. Leaving me as perhaps the only person in the state not considering a run for the prized office.
The only politicians who argue against gerrymandering are the ones not benefiting from it.
That is how it is done. Here in Illinois, after a young Barrack Obama received 30% of the vote against a well liked incumbent, his house was drawn out of the district so he would not be able to run against that same incumbent again. In another instance an incumbent was drawn out of the district he had represented.
In states where the Republicans are in charge the maps favor them and in states controlled by the Democrats it is the other way around. There needs to be a nonpartisan approach to district lines.

According to the Chicago Tribune one third of the entire General Assembly is opting not to run for re-election. Given the state they leave Illinois in who could blame them?
I am starting a series on Gerrymandering, which I find repugnant no matter which side does it- and they both do it.
I can guarantee that the readers who lean Republican will blame the Democrats and those who lean Democrat will blame the Republicans for gerrymandering.
Both parties are to blame.
I always tell people they should run or office, but the scrutiny and money needed is a deterrent.
I know I am not the only Republican who doesn’t support President Trump. Is there a place for us?
I have been often called a RINO (Republican in name only) because I do not support the complete Republican agenda.
When I first got interested in politics many years ago, the parties had a much wider tent and there was room for many different viewpoints. For example, there were both pro-choice and pro-life advocates in the same party. Not so much now.
I think I am still a Republican, I just don’t drink the Kool-aid.
Of course it is okay. No one should feel they have to back a politician they disagree with even they are from the same party.
Like Carmen, I have been struggling with my political party affiliations. After much soul searching, I have decided that while I have Libertarian leanings, I am still a Republican. I am just a Republican who despises the Republican president.
As long as President Trump uses his Twitter account , there will be no inner peace for anyone.

It seems that every Illinois Democrat running for office will have to explain their own Blagojevich taint. In this case, why billionaire J.B. Pritzker gave a sizable donation to then Governor Rod Blagojevich’s already sizable campaign coffers then shortly thereafter received a sizable state check for a project Pritzker was deeply involved in. There may not have been any quid pro quo but, in all things Blago, it seems pretty slimy…

For as long as their season lasts I will be doing a Chicago Bears pre-game cartoon.
Irrational, impetuous, angry, what appears to be confused thinking (Read the transcripts of his speeches). Maybe.
President Trump had to think about denouncing Nazis and the KKK, but has no trouble immediately sending out negative tweets about people who have criticized him.
I think his definition of ‘good’ means ‘agrees with him.’

There are a couple of reasons why the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant policies, as recently voiced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, frost my shorts. First, I’m a free market kind of guy. You know how markets grow? By population growth — and the United States grows markets, in part, through immigration.
Second, because three of my grandparents were immigrants. Believe me when I tell you they were better Americans than anyone, including the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. For starters, to become citizens they actually had to know American history. They also had to read the U.S. Constitution. Our Commander-In-Chief has shown over and over again that he has done neither.
I have already read comments on this strip at go comics in which some readers think Carmen is supporting keeping the statues. Stay tuned to the rest of the series.
Winslow is right. Carmen’s response would only feel good in the short term.
The rancor, the anger, the president. Sometimes I just want to toss in the towel and avoid politics all together. Impossible, though. We all just have to trudge on.

Having one of the heaviest tax burdens in the United States is one of the reasons Chicago is the only major metro area in the country to lose population between 2015 and 2016.
