Second-to-last man in Chicago

See the full cartoon here.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel defends yet ANOTHER tax increase.

Prickly City: What about Guam?

Guam is still under the threat of North Korea. Kim Jong-un said that his missile test over Japan was a prelude to attacking Guam. Can you imagine living under this threat on a daily basis and knowing that North Korea’s leader is crazy enough to do it?

Yet another CPS property tax increase

See the full cartoon here.

Part of the school funding bill passed in Springfield allows Chicago Public Schools to raise property taxes. Not that the citizens of this fair city haven’t already been bludgeoned with a a whole slew of new taxes, including an earlier property tax increase and the hated Toni Preckwinkle soda tax. Once again I say, “It’s hard to believe Chicago is hemorrhaging population…”

Prickly City: We should be able to agree on this one

We fought a war and many lives were lost to stop Nazism, not denouncing it immediately is wrong.

President Trump’s excuse of him thinking about what to say is just bull. The man has no trouble immediately tweeting denouncements of actors, journalists and politicians that have “offended” him and saying whatever comes into his head. Suddenly he has to think? Bull.

Prickly City: Have we all lost it?

I remember people have rational discussions about politics. Being conservative with mostly liberal friends, they could get quite heated, but they never disintegrated into fighting and name calling.

The rancor is much more pronounced because of social media. I have found in comments made on my cartoons that instead of saying why they think I am wrong and addressing the issue, many commenters just call me a name. Not a way to change minds.

Prickly City: What’s she got?

She’s got nothing. Like me, Carmen is lost in a political wasteland where she just can’t find her place.

Trump Twitter bombs the GOP

See the full cartoon and the video here.

Apparently, our president will not be content until he has ticked off everyone in the country. Now he’s going after Republican senators and, in particular, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. Remember Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment: Thou Shalt not speak ill of another Republican? Neither does President Trump…

Captain Rauner of the Titanic

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner goes through staffers faster than you can say “Scaramucci.”

State Department of Children and Family Services struggle with cutbacks

See the full cartoon and video here.

The state Department of Children and Family Services has been dealing with budget cuts for a while now with catastrophic results. The Chicago Tribune reports that cutbacks are straining child sex crime investigations. Surely we can all agree that a legitimate purpose of government is to protect the most vulnerable. When it fails in that duty one has to ask what purpose does it serve at all.

Prickly City: Out in the wilderness

Carmen wandering through the wilderness represents my own confused feelings at this time. The Republican Party is no longer the party I grew up in. It used to be that they believed in giving everyone a level playing field so we could all succeed if we made the effort. Under the current leadership, it just seems petty and mean.

I don’t see myself as a Democrat either. Confusing and thought provoking times.

Trump’s Afghanistan policy

See the full cartoon here.

As one cable news talking head put Afghanistan, “You can’t win it but you can’t afford to lose it”. I’m starting to think of the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania as ‘Lyndon Baines Trump’. He has certainly found the tunnel at the end of the tunnel…

Prickly City: What will they do?

As an editorial cartoonist, I am immersed in politics on a daily basis. Lately, I have been feeling a bit like Carmen. I just want to take a break from it all, but as Winslow knows, you can’t really take a break from politics.

What will the New Horizons mission find in their next flyby? We only know it will be something we have never seen before. That is why we explore.

Prickly City: Danger Carmen, Danger!

While it is possible that Carmen and Winslow could be automated one day, they are in more danger of newspapers disappearing which would threaten their existence.

Illinois’ perpetual eclipse

See the full cartoon here.

The eclipse is a big deal and, in fact, will view totality in southern Illinois. What with our toxic politics, fleeing population and near no-business growth, (especially outside of the Chicago area), we really are mired in perpetual darkness.

Illinois never ending eclipse

See the full cartoon here.

Illinois House Speaker-for-Life Mike Madigan continues his domination over all things Illinois. Including overshadowing Governor Bruce Rauner. One has to wonder when the state will have a chance to get out from the darkness.

Prickly City: The book

There are readers who think the Hunny Bunny cartoons are beating a dead horse, but I disagree. For one thing Hillary Clinton’s latest book will be available after Labor Day. We need to understand why she lost the election.

The lost cause

See the full cartoon here.

The South is the part of the country where I have lived most of my life. As such, I have always been flummoxed by the number of statues commemorating the Confederacy. The time has long been past to take these monuments down — not to bow to political correctness but because they memorialize a rebel force that took up arms against my country.

Prickly City: She would what?

A fictitious character can be anything. When a popular character like Dr. Who can be  a woman, that inspires girls to believe they can be anything too.

Prickly City: Use, don’t lose, your mind

Some folks have reacted badly to the news that Jodie Whittaker was cast in the role of the 13th doctor on Dr. Who.
Really people? Besides the fact that it is just a television show, there is nothing wrong with the doctor being a woman. Part of the appeal of Dr. Who is that it embraces change and this is a good change.

Prickly City: Does it have to stay that way?

As long as we view third party votes as wasted, discourage compromise and let big money control candidates then it will never change.

Prickly City: Going alternative?

As long as people view third parties as a waste of a vote, we will never be able to have more choice in our elections. A third party would force the other two to have to compromise more often and help unblock the gridlock in government.

Prickly City: Masochism or a sense of duty?

I always tell people that they should run for office, we need good people to run. Unfortunately, it is more difficult than ever. Besides opening up your life for scrutiny, you need money. Lots of money.

Prickly City: More important things?

I am not saying that the issues are not important, it is that instead of actually working together to find solutions for our problems we spend our time saying how stupid the other side is and nothing really gets done.
